Corker sucks a girl's face

Ok class. Let's go over this again.
If you are a candidate for a major federal office, and you are running on a conservative family values platform, should you pay attention to what your children are doing on the Internet?
Anyone? Anyone?
Wonkette does it again.
Julia Corker - daughter of senate candidate Bob Corker - is featured on facebook.com in a lip lock with another girl and joining in an interesting underwear dance. (type in bob corker in the search box on the wonkette blog to see the post)

I highly doubt Corker has the time or know-how to monitor everything his adult children do online. While it appears this was Julia's decision to put these pictures online, I don't see the need to link to them. Why can't this race simply be about issues, not picking apart one-another's family. It will be wrong when the Republicans do it, and its wrong when we do it.

Wrong-o my good friend. BC has the $$ and is spending it on a cadre of high powered DC consultants orchestrating his every move. Like it or not, politics at this level is "extreme makeover" at work, and keeping tabs on the public behavior of spawn who you strategically feature in key campaign collateral is fundamental blocking and tackling.

Well, I guess its good for Ford that he has decided to play the field in lieu of having Children. Honestly I don't know why anyone with Children would want to go into politics today. The pressure on a child to remain on guard 24/7 for fear of doing something that would play into the political opposition must be enormous...I don't envy anyone in that position.

Mr. Kopp, I think it's disgusting that what passes for a "Democrat" consultant would stoop to these disgusting tactics. How would you like it if your children were posted on the Internet for all to see in an unflattering situation because you happen to work for Phil Bredesen or Harold Ford.

You are the problem with politics today. This blog makes no mention of issues, it merely seeks to destroy others who seek political office, and apparently now their families too.

I'm no Republican, but your tactics make me ashamed to vote Democrat. I don't know how you sleep at night, scumbag.

You are adding to the homophobic climate by even suggesting a conservative should find something wrong with two girls kissing.
Is Alan Keyes or Dick Cheney less conservative because they have gay daughters? And you don't know the context of this photo? She may not be gay, and more importantly, who cares?!?!?!?!?! Her fatrher running as a conservative has NOTHING to do with it unless you're a homophobe.
Once again our "Democratic" party in Tennessee is showing how conservative it really is. Of course, to refresh everyones short term memory, just last week, our Democratic(HA!) Governor said he would vote FOR banning gay marriage.
Call me when the real Democrats emerge.

Because the GOP has made every race in America about VALUES not issues, that's why. Because the GOP keeps telling America that Democrats are the "party of Death" and liberalism is a social disease that kills, that's why.

If Republicans are going to present themselves as the party of family values and moral righteousness, then when they and their own families do not live up to that standard then we are within our rights to call them on their BS, that's why.

Grow up. Politics hasn't been about "issues" since Lee Atwater's day.

I'm calling bullshit on that remark. Republican hypocrisy should be uncovered and broadcast wherever it's found.

Let Bob Corker tells us where he stands on the whole "moral values" issue. Let him tell us if he's going to oppose a gay marriage amendment. Let's ask him where he stands on these resolutions banning gay adoptions.

And last I heard, Bredesen said he was against a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage in TN, he said we already had a law making it illegal and it was political pandering to put a constitutional amendment on the ballot. Which indeed it is.

Well I hope to hear that Bob will support an amendment against gay marriage, just as Harold Ford Jr says he will on his site. That will keep this "wedge" issue out of play.

Im a Republican, and excited about Harold Ford as a candidate for the Dems - not because I want him to win, but because he has shown more class and dignity than Kopp or Litz ever have or will. While I wont be voting for him, Dems can be proud of Ford as a candidate.

Last week Bredesen stated very clearly he would vote FOR the ban on gay marriage in Tennessee.
I think it's in the June 8 issue of the Tenneseean, but you could easily Google it.

While I certainly don't agree that the Republicans are the party of values and morals, I think it's wrong to say "when they and their own families do not live up to that standard then we are within our rights to call them on their BS, that's why."
I don't think Corker's daughter wasn't living up to family values. What she did is just fine and wasn't immoral or a family values issue, and Democrats certainly shouldn't make it an issue. When we do that, we're justifying the right saying that it's a moral/family values issue.

Gee, S-Town Mike, like I didn't know from your posts ....

{Litz rolls eyes}

I know Sharon is NOT a Republican, and much as I respect your views in other arenas, I still think you're off base on this one. The point is not what Corker's daughter is or is not doing. The point is what Corker is or is not saying.

It's the hypocrisy.

Litz,

So, because Republicans do it, its ok for Democrats to? The reason I am a Democrat is because I think the Democratic party IS the better party, the more "moral" party, the more "decent" party. I don't call myself a Democrat because of a hatred of Republicans, I call myself a Democrat because of my love of Democratic values in the American society. Just because Karl Rove or Lee Atwater do something, doesn't make it right. The terrorists blow up innocent civilians, it doesn't mean we have the right to do the same...obviously those are more extreme examples than Democrat/Republicans, but its the same principle that just because your opponent does something, doesn't mean you have to stoop to their level.

If Corker lies about his stance on issues, his career history, his political decisions, by all means, attack away...but his daughter is doing what most of us, who fall victim to the human condiditon, do...that is make mistakes, or do stupid things, or do silly things done in a context not easily transported to the political blogosphere. Desiring a higher standard of political discourse might be a sign of adolescent political naivete...but if more people in the political realm felt the same way, than it would cease to be naivete and become the political norm.

kudos to the Dems with dignity enough to call out Kopp for this low blow on the Corker family. Glad to see some sense of decency and propriety exists.

So, because Republicans do it, its ok for Democrats to?

When Republicans claim to be the party of “family,” “values” and “sanctity of marriage” all of which THEY define as meaning heterosexual and “pure until marriage” (I guess because sex is impure?), then we are right and justified in calling them on their hypocrisy. It’s no different than calling Jeff “Marriage Protection Act” Miller on his hypocrisy for sponsoring the marriage amendment, and then putting his own marriage at risk by having an extra-marital affair.

The problem with the Republican Party today is that they insist on legislating their view of “values.” In so doing they are legislating a high standard of personal behavior that they themselves do not live up to.

On Bob Corker’s website his top issue is Faith & Family - Protecting our Values. He is the one who has made this a campaign issue. He says:

“As Senator, I will insist that the United States Senate be a place that reflects our common sense, conservative Tennessee values by supporting faith and family. It must be a place where we always remember that we are "one nation under God", where we support the sanctity of marriage, and we strive to bring out the best in each other. As a Senator, I will be a consistent supporter of the pro-life cause.  Our greatness as a country is not based on our wealth. It is based on our goodness.”

If this is how Bob Corker views his role as a U.S. Senator, if these are the issues that are driving his bid to represent Tennesseeans in the Senate, then I say we are right to ask him to live up to the same standard he is setting for the rest of us. That he is unable to do so should be a big hint that maybe the role of a Senator is not to be legislating people’s personal, private behavior.

Litz,

If Bob Corker's daughter was Gay, and she wanted to get married, and Bob Corker thought we should make an acception for his daughter to get married and nobody else, I could see your point about hypocracy. And in general, I think the whole Republican platform about "protecting family values" is a crock of S$#%, BUT, that doesn't mean dragging Corker's daughter into the debate is neccessary. Corker's daughter is not running for office, and as far as I can tell she isn't applying for a marriage license, so I don't see where the "hypocracy" is on Bob Corker's part.

That's irrelevant. The "hypocrisy" (sorry for the spelling error earlier!) comes in because the behavior exhibited in the photos is precisely the kind of behavior that the (as you aptly put it!) "crock of S$#%" family values crowd is railing against. They want to shut down websites like MySpace; yesterday Bush signed tough new indecency fines for television; on June 13, the House passed House Resolution 318 that begins "Whereas married fathers are more likely to have a close, enduring relationship with their children than unmarried fathers." Really? Who says? Show me the research!

Personally, I don't care if Corker's daughter is gay, straight, bi-sexual or (as is probably the case) just a young college kid testing the waters of her own sexuality. I don't feel it's my business. But the Republican Party feels it's their business. They seem to want to regulate what's happening in bedrooms and living rooms all across America. So the same goes for them. I refuse to accept a double standard whereby the Republican Party can dictate one class of behavior for my kids and ANOTHER class of behavior for their own.

That is why.

I might agree with you, accept I would hope you would include Harold Ford in that group...because Ford voted for HR318 which you seem to have a problem with, and he supports a bigotted constitutional amendment banning Gay Marriage throughout the country. Now Corker is wrong on these issues, as is Ford, but I don't see the need for personal attacks to show how wrong they are. It seems more of a desperate lashing out, than civilized discourse. Also, if Corker had called for the outlaw of "homosexual" acts, than perhaps you could call him out on "hypocrisy" (sorry for my earlier mispelling), but so long as Democrats like Ford latch onto the Republican "values" game, I don't see how we can attack Corker for doing the same.

Sadly, I DO have a problem with that. I can't imagine what he was thinking with that vote. No, strike that, I DO know what he was thinking with that vote. Ford Jr. is not my dream candidate for Senate, trust me, however when I factor in the real possibility that a Ford Jr. win could give Democrats the majority and we might finally, FINALLY, have some freaking accountability in Washington, that seals it.

I am supporting Ford Jr., for some very complicated reasons. And I do feel that if Ford Jr. were in Washington, he'd be more responsive than what we have now: Rubber Stamp Republibot Lamar Alexander and Water Carrier Frist.

I feel that the child of a candidate is freegame to an extent. Through a child's actions, you can probably tell what is being taught and what is accepted in the home. If Corker's daughter is sucking some girl's face, I could care less. However, I think it speaks volumes about the candidate, especially if they're running on a conservative platform. It is a very fine line, however. I think the blog of Frist's son speaks for itself.

His youngest Emily was out on the town the night after she got a DUA on Suck Creek road. Way to go Bob-O
