Someone please turn back on the lights in Hendersonville

Back in 476 AD a period known as the "Dark Ages" began in Europe. The civilizations of Greece and Rome had fallen, and in their place had risen generations of narrow-minded leaders who governed on the principles of hate and destruction while wrapping themselves in the cloak of Christianity.
For many years now our state has made great strides in putting aside past racial, ethnic and religious biases to achieve the goals of prosperity and enlightment.
But today a leader among us has emerged as one who reflects a Dark Ages mindset.
Her name is Debra Maggart, and she is a Republican state represenative from Hendersonville in Sumner County.
Earlier this week Maggart went on Nashville TV (Newschannel5.com 3/27/06) to stand by her earlier claims that gay couples adopt children for the purpose of having someone to molest. Her remarks were almost too grotesque to take seriously, but we as citizens must do so.
Anyone who would damn souls with such reckless disregard for the truth has no business being in a position of power in our society. For Rep. Maggart to make such claims while wrapping herself in the cloak of Christianity is an insult to those of us who believe that the teachings of Christ were of love, tolerance and kindness toward your fellow man.
The only step citizens must take in this instance is to reject the kind of darkness Maggart's thinking can bring over a commmunity and its people.
Someone please turn back on the lights in Hendersonville and expose Maggart for what she really is - a hatemonger who - if left unchecked - will usher in an era of dark times for Sumner County.

Maggart HAS a Democratic challenger: Patrick Gardner. Please see the Daily Kos diary: http://www.dailykos.com/story/2006/3/30/101745/464. There is a link to contact Patrick. He will need to raise $100,000 for the TNDP to view him as a viable candidate -- they think Maggart's seat is unwinnable. Let's prove them wrong!

I was STUNNED to read Maggart's comments. How does someone like this get elected? The real question is, now that she's exposed her ridiculous predjudice, will she be re-elected?

Hello everyone! My first post here, so be gentle. A couple of points:
1) I doubt very much that Rep. Maggart's base in Hendersonville was upset in the least by what she said. They take it as a simple statement that adoption by gays is not the "ideal" situation for foster kids. (Like being wards of the state is...) While she might have galvanized the left in Sumner County (all 12 of us...), I doubt she annoyed her base at all. Quite the opposite.
2) I spoke at length to a colleague who was a staffer for Rep. Maggart in the '04 race. She reinforces what I said above and also offers that Rep. Maggart was quoted out of context in the original story in the Tennessean.
That said, we must work to elect Patrick Gardner (electpg@comcast.net) in the 45th. Patrick is an old-style blue-collar, pro-labor Democrat who has a streak of pregressiveness about him as well. I think he is the better choice in the 45th.
Finally, to anyone in Sumner County who reads/posts here -join the Sumner County Democratic Party and/or Democratic Women! Numbers matter! Size matters! Go to www.sumnerdems.org and get involved. And vote in the May 2 Democratic Primary -let's show the opposition that we are here, we are loud and we are large!
(Oh, and if any of you live in the 4th district of Sumner County, I'd appreciate your vote as your next county commissioner!)
